vaca wrap-up: HH ’09

Being back home is a wonderful thing, but I had a fabulous time at the beach last week.  I was there with family and of course we all had our moments…days, even…but still – great trip.  I kinda wish I’d taken the Mustang – everybody looks better getting out of a Mustang than a Corolla.  But it’s two doors, and didn’t need the extra mileage anyway, so it’s all good.

The place we stayed this year [a trilevel 2BR/2 bath w/deck and view of trees and a stream] was a bazillion times better than last year [a studio/closet in a hugely built-up area (ie. view of parking lot)].  Privacy and space make getting along with family SO much easier.  Especially if they snore.  Loudly.

My dad was there to relax.  My sister and I were there to shop and hang out at the beach.  We all accomplished our goals.

We shopped, snacked, and watched the Hannah Montana movie.  Which is not that bad.  I mean, if you settle in for the cheese of it, it’s actually really fun.  Because I like to let my inner dork free sometimes, I suggested we learn the dance from the movie – it’s quite involved, but totally fun to try.

We mastered everything up to the first zig zag part, then we decided we’d sweated enough and hit the showers.  But we laughed a lot.  And if you can’t be corny with your sister – well shoot, I feel sorry for ya.

Went to the beach at midday and got burnt up on the sand. [And by the sun, I found out later.]  But had fun actually swimming in the ocean.  There were hardly any waves and the water was shallow for hundreds of feet, so it woulda been cool for kids, but I coulda used a few more waves.  Every day we got a few more waves tan the day before, so that was nice.

So besides shopping and hanging at the beach, I got some reading done:

super in the city Loved it all!

After passing a hog on the side of the road on the drive down, seeing an alligator in the stream behind our place, and the bunch of pelicans that kept divebombing the waves a hundred yards or so from where we swam, I felt like my nature communion quotient had been satisfied.

Then I had the lovely privilege of getting to play vball on Saturday night -which was just as fab as it sounds [if you love vball like I do].  I jammed a finger, but otherwise enjoyed myself immensely.

And finally I made it home last night – just in time to watch some crazy people on the VMAs.  Another successful vacation over, another day at work looms.

sunny days, sandy moments

I’m enjoying a short few days off, and just wanted to take a moment while I’m waiting for the shower to document my first time really enjoying the beach since the 90s.

the essentials

Here’s hoping I don’t get sunburned!

500 times more interesting

That’s how much better Heroes is when it’s about Sylar instead of the Benetrellis.  But I’ll save the rest of what I have to say for the Roundtable.

My vacation was awesome – relaxing – which I’d never have thought before, being in NYC.  But since I’ve been there so much, it really was just about family.  Oh and food.  Really good food.

Cafe Habana is probably my favorite place, but we had some great falafel, fried green tomatoes [seriously! in the City? for real – Brother Jimmy’s does them well.]  Hit up Negril and had some Cafe Spice leftovers, and it was happy days.

And we saw Guys and Dolls and Perfect Murder (again – and it was better the 2nd time).  I’ve always loved Oliver Platt [ever since he was Porthos in the Three Musketeers], and he’s playing Nathan Detroit.  But the real gem in this show is Nicely Nicely.  Tituss Burgess was a shining star when it came to Sit Down (You’re Rocking the Boat).   Best number of the night.

getting exiled: MTV screws brats and their indigenous hosts

We’re all familiar with Sweet 16, right? Well, MTV has found a way to capitalize even more off of this sad franchise. Recycle the faux debs after their 18th birthdays, and thrust them upon some 3rd world folks that are eager for some o’ that Western money [though the dollar bill ain’t what it used to be].

Throw in a bunch of reruns of the shows for the lucky divas and divo (who could forget Bjorn?) and then clips from the respective parents who’ve decided that 18 is a perfect age to start parenting their children. Great! Add a slew of indigenous peoples around the world and well, there’s sure to be drama.

Here’s a bit of Mtv’s own take on this:

A few years after tossing the parties that made them stars in their schools and fueled rivalries among the rich kids, you’re going to see some of the Sweet 16-ers you loved to hate the most — Ava, Sierra, Amanda, Bjorn, Marissa, Chelsi, Meleny and Alex — shipped away from their plush homes and easy lives and Exiled to foreign locations such as the jungles of the Amazon, the tundra of the Arctic Circle, the Andes mountains and remote islands in the South Pacific where they’ll have to live like local commoners with none of the amenities of their normally privileged lives.

Yes, we are now inflicting our own badly unraised children on MORE of the international community. CLassic question from one of our lucky prizewinners: “Have they even seen people before?” Parental response: “They are people, hon.” Common people.

This has train wreck written all over it, so of course, I might have to watch. But my sentient mind will be protesting. The anthropologist in me will most likely die a slow, painful death.

How do I reconcile participating in this tripe? I have no idea. I might actually be morally superior enough to avoid the entire show. But I don’t know. Where’s Bjorn going?

ok. no cool title. I just love dance.

Opening with a Shane Sparks routine hopefully foreshadows more great things to come.  This is what hip-hop IS, y’all.  Cool that the judges are all back – nice to see Debbie Allen again, but we need to bring Shane Sparks back to the show for good.  ABDC is kinda sucking right now anyway…

Woo!  Nigel’s 1st fave is the Bollywood number by Katee and Joshua.  I don’t remember every move from the first time they did it, but i feel as though tonight it’s even better.  WAY better than the group piece they did with everyone.  Josh and Katee really should be the top two this year.

And Mary’s fave is Courtney and Gev’s rumba.  So anyway, where is Sabra, y’all?  I haven’t seen anything from her this year – and she was freakin’ awesome!

The Pop-Off is a little bit awesome, y’all.  I kinda love them.  But I think I’m leaning toward Philip.  Robert is actually kinda freaky to me, and Philip’s smoothness made it look like he has no bones.  But both of these guys should be in commercials or something.

Adam’s fave is Dave Scott’s choreography for what we now know is an extended Wrigley’s commercial with Twitch and Comfort [who, btw, was on FIRE in the opening Shane Sparks piece].

Lil C’s pick is ‘Bleeding Love’ by TabNap and Chelsie and Mark.  I really like Chelsie.  Really a lot.  She’s all heart up there.  I like her hip hop a lot, too.

But uh, what is this?  Mary Murphy dancing?  I couldn’t not look…but…that was weird.  But good.  In a way.  I think if Mary had gotten a different dress it would’ve been better.  How weird for her to be dancing with Dmitry, too.

Katee and Will are incredible.  The pas de deux was incredible.  This season really has been the best in choreography.

Sonya’s take on ‘The Garden’ with Courtney and Mark still has SO much flavor.  What a suck to follow the pas de deux, tho.

1st out? Courtney.  Woo! [next should be Twitch]

One of this things about this show that really getrs me is how it really works. Dancers visibly improve as the show continues, and the top 5 guys doing ‘Five Guys Named Moe’ are much better than when they first performed it.  I totally forgot Nigel choreographed that.

Criss Angel is a whole nother animal…as is, apparently, this piece by Wade Robson.  Just what is his Vegas show?  I thought he was a magician.  I liked the work, though.  Cirque is awesome.

2nd out? MF-er. Effing piece of crap.  NO!  She deserves to be at least 2nd [if not 1st].  Folks, Twitch is my hunnybunny but uh – he better not win.  It better be Joshua.

Oh HOT.  Prize for top boy and top girl.  Katee gets 50Gs.  WOO! I could totally be consoled with 50Gs.

I luh Debbie Allen.  And she is doing great work with her Academy, and the kids are awesome.  Nigel’s better than I thought – though he’s also extremely cheesy.  That dude is a ham.

I did love Mia’s piece with the door.  Katee and Twitch.  La la – I love it.

I don’t believe in the Jonas Brothers.  This is when I thank God for DVR and the fast forward button.

Twitchington!  The Viennese Waltz that Jean-Marc did.  This piece really is beautiful.  And I like Kherington.  It’s too bad she couldn’t’ve held on longer.

And the last piece?  No Air.  I don’t have the words.

And the top SYTYCD’ers?  Love ’em!  Donyelle’s working with Shane Sparks?  AWESOME!  Lauren’s working with MC? hrm??  Benji, Benji, Benji!  [but, er, uh, where was Sabra?]

Thanks for listenin’ to me y’all.  We voted, and Joshua is the new winner!  Love goes out to ya Josh!  Live life!  Be it – Do it!

Wii arm

Mole Spoiler:

It’s Paul.

I had an awesome weekend with friends.  A full house of folks and a baby.  A beautiful baby girl.  [She doesn’t cry, she just makes a few lil sounds.  She’s SO adorable.]

So yesterday, we busted out the Wii and played.  Tennis.  Baseball.  Bowling.  Golf.  It was really fun.  And then after my guest left, I played some more.  And now, I can’t lift my right arm past my shoulder.  Seriously.  I’m in pain.

But the wknd was great.  I’m so tired, but I’m happy.  Plans for travel over the next couple months are definitely much more limited than usual.  [Gas being what it is.]  But I am looking forward to Hilton Head.  It’s been probably more than 10 years since I’ve been.  Almost that long since I’ve been to the beach at all.

Life is actually pretty good, right about now – Wii arm and all.

a prescient moment

Every once in a while I get deja vu.  Sometimes I could swear [if I actually swore] that I definitely had lived certain situations before.  And sometimes I know for sure (for sure for sure) that I dreamt about specific events.

So, about a year ago…maybe a little more…I dreamed that my sister and her bf and I were in Rome and were walking around in a maze of some kind.  I think we were actually getting chased by something and so we were trying to hide in the maze, but…I’m always getting chased in my dreams.  [don’t really know what that’s about, but I’m always getting chased in my dreams.]

It’s just kinda weird/cool that I dreamt that when I didn’t even know all of us would be there.  And it totally came true [except for the chasing us part, which usually doesn’t in real life].  We were at the catacombs, and I realized – this is it!  I dreamed this!  Forever ago!

I kinda wish I knew more about dreams, since I dream a lot and they’re fairly interesting.

Of course, sometimes, they’re a bit of nonsense.  And then, more recently, other people have been dreaming about me.  Which I’m not really sure how that goes.  But it’s always usually fun to hear about a dream soeone else had about you.

In other news, I finally got a chance to catch up on all the tv I missed – the pinnacle of which I think was A&E’s new adaptation of ‘The Andromeda Strain‘ [my favorite Michael Crichton book ever].  I had no idea there were even plans for a remake, until I saw the preview in the movie theater after I saw Baby Mama [which is funny and you should go see it.  SUPPORT FEMALE LEADS!!!]  Other faves?  The 2-hr Grey’s Anatomy finale, and the Gossip Girl ender.  Definitely awesome.

And so, the dog days of summer are ushered in.  It’s hot, and there’s not much on tv.  So I’m just watching randomosity and waiting for SYTYCD to get to the top 20.  [my fave summer show – long live Sabra!]

I am studiously ignoring all political news, and basically just praying for everyone in the world, considering the catastrophes that have ravaged so many places in the last month.  Pop culture is the escape of choice, right now.
